Roma have announced the signing of veteran German defender Mats Hummels on a free transfer, with the player expected to earn €3m per season.

They have already signed Spanish defender Mario Hermoso on deadline day to replace Chris Smalling, who has moved to Al Fayha in Saudi Arabia.
Negotiations with the German were stalled but resumed on Tuesday, and he flew in for a medical and signed the contract on Wednesday.
It is reportedly a one-year deal with the option to extend for another season, with a salary of €3m plus performance-related bonuses.
Prior to joining AS Roma, Hummels had a distinguished tenure at Borussia Dortmund, where he made a significant impact, becoming the club’s second-highest appearance maker with 508 matches. He also had a stint at Bayern Munich, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top defenders in European football.
The move to AS Roma marks a new chapter for Hummels, who has opted for this opportunity after leaving Dortmund as a free agent. His decision comes amidst interest from various clubs, including those in the English Premier League, but he ultimately chose to embrace the challenge of Serie A.
He chose to wear the number 15 shirt.
Hummels will turn 36 in December and has played for just two clubs, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
His contract with Dortmund expires on June 30 and he has been in talks with a number of teams, including Real Sociedad.
